You asked three shops what it costs to put Starlink on your aircraft. You got three numbers. They are not close to each other, and none of them describes the same job. Nobody is trying to mislead you. There is simply no standard scope for this work, and until you impose one, the totals on those three pages are not comparable in any meaningful way.
Heavy maintenance has a shared vocabulary. A phase inspection is a defined task list, so when two shops quote it, they are at least quoting the same thing before the discrepancies start. A connectivity installation has no such anchor. Each shop decides what to include, what to assume, what to leave out, and what to quietly bill later. The difference between a low quote and a high quote is frequently not price at all. It is scope.
Here is what a complete Starlink installation quote contains, in the order it usually appears, with what to watch for in each line.
Every installation has to be approved for your specific aircraft, and the route depends on the airframe, on who holds what, and on the day you ask. This is the single most important line in the document, and it is the one most often reduced to a sentence fragment.
You want three things stated plainly: which approval the shop intends to install under, whether the shop holds it or is buying access to someone else's, and whether the cost of that access is inside the number you are looking at or billed separately. A quote that says "STC installation" without naming the basis has told you nothing, and the gap between "included" and "billed at cost" on this line alone can be substantial.
Ask what happens if the approval route changes between signing and induction. In a market moving this fast, that is a real scenario, not a hypothetical.
The equipment is not one box. There is the antenna assembly, a power supply, a wireless access point, mounting hardware, and the cabling and connectors between them. A quote should list what is included, because the omission you will discover later is usually something small and mandatory.
Then the commercial question: is the shop supplying the hardware, or are you buying it directly and having the shop install it? Both are normal. What matters is that you know which one you are agreeing to, and if the shop is supplying, whether the price you see carries a markup. Markup is legitimate. Undisclosed markup is where the relationship goes bad three weeks later.
You want the hour count and the rate separately, and you want the rate broken out by discipline. Avionics, sheet metal, and interior are not billed the same, and this job touches all three. A single blended labor line hides the assumptions you most need to see.
Do the arithmetic. If a labor line shows a total but no hours, or hours that do not multiply out against any stated rate, that line is an estimate wearing a suit. And settle overtime before induction, not after: whether it is authorized, at what rate, and who approves it.
This is where the real spread between shops lives, and it is the part owners consistently underestimate because none of it is visible when the job is done.
Mounting the antenna means structural provisions in the fuselage crown. Powering it means finding capacity, running new feeders, and possibly touching the electrical load analysis. Connecting it means routing cable through an already full airframe, and putting equipment somewhere it can be cooled and accessed. A shop that has done your type several times prices this from experience. A shop doing its first one prices it from a drawing, and those two numbers are rarely the same.
Ask directly how many of these the shop has completed on your make and model. It is a fair question, it is not rude, and the answer tells you how firm the rest of the page is.
If there is legacy satcom on the aircraft, three different jobs are possible and they carry three different prices: leave it installed and inert, remove it entirely, or keep it wired as a backup. Each has consequences for weight, for monthly service cost, and for the labor line above.
Removal also raises a question most quotes ignore: what happens to the equipment that comes off. Some of it carries residual value. If the quote is silent on that, ask, because the default answer is that it stays with the shop.
Unglamorous, mandatory, and a genuine cost line. A connectivity installation generates a weight and balance revision, instructions for continued airworthiness, a flight manual supplement, logbook entries, and the approval paperwork itself. Someone has to produce all of it.
It should appear in the quote. When it does not, it is either buried in a labor line or it is going to arrive later as its own invoice.
Ask what the shop does to prove the system works before it hands you the keys, and what happens if it does not perform in flight the way it performed on the ground. Ground checks, functional testing, and any required flight test are scope items with hours attached. "We will make sure it works" is a sentiment, not a line item.
This is the most common way an owner ends up disappointed by a quote that was technically accurate.
Turn time is how long the shop needs your aircraft. Slot date is when the shop can start. Almost every quote states the first and leaves the second to a phone call, and the second is usually the one that decides when you actually fly again.
A ten-day turn that cannot begin for two months puts the aircraft back in service later than a three-week turn starting next week. The shop with the better-sounding quote is the slower answer.
Get both in writing, and get the slot with a date on it rather than a season.
Separate from the installation, and worth separating in the paperwork too. Who sets up the service account, whose name it is in, what the plan is, and when billing starts. If the shop is arranging it, ask whether anything is marked up and what happens to the account if you later move to a different shop.
Workmanship warranty and hardware warranty are different things with different durations. Get both stated. Then ask the question that matters at eleven at night over the Atlantic: who do I call, and what is the response commitment. A warranty you can only exercise by flying the aircraft back to the shop that installed it has a cost attached that is not written anywhere on the quote.
Ferry or positioning cost if the shop is not local, hangar and shop supplies, and tax. Sales tax treatment of parts and labor varies by state, and it is one of the quiet reasons two identical scopes at two shops land at different totals.
Here is what the difference usually looks like in practice. Both shops are reputable. Both quotes are accurate. They describe different work.

Shop A will almost always show the lower total. Shop A is also carrying two allowances, an undisclosed markup, and no start date. That is not a cheaper quote. That is a less complete one, and the difference tends to surface after the aircraft is already in the building.
A line that reads "structural provisions allowance" with a round number attached looks responsible. It is not a price. It is a placeholder that lets a shop hand you a total that appears complete while committing to nothing, and it anchors you to a figure nobody had to justify.
"This quote covers the scope in Attachment A at a firm price. Anything discovered during installation will be quoted individually for written approval before the work is performed."
Send these to every shop, unchanged. How fast and how completely each one answers is itself a data point.
Get the answers in writing. Not because anyone is being dishonest, but because in six weeks the person who told you will be under a different aircraft, and a good memory is not a document.
